ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sleeper cell

A sleeper cell is like a group of spies who pretend to be normal people, but they're secretly working for another country or group. They're called a "sleeper" cell because they're sleeping, or not doing anything bad, until they get a signal to wake up and start doing their secret mission.

Imagine that you and your friends are playing a game of hide-and-seek. Everyone hides in different places and waits for the person who's "it" to try to find them. The sleeper cell is like one of your friends who hides really well and stays really quiet until it's time to come out and surprise you. The only difference is that instead of playing hide-and-seek, they're trying to do something bad.

The people in the sleeper cell might live in the same place as you, look like you, and act just like you. They might even have jobs or go to school just like you. But secretly, they're working together to do something bad, like spy on people or plant bombs.

Sometimes, the sleeper cell might stay asleep for months, even years, until they get the signal to wake up and start their secret mission. When that happens, they might suddenly start doing things that seem strange or suspicious, like buying a lot of weapons or meeting up with other people in secret.

So, even though they might look like regular people, it's important to be careful and watch out for people who might be part of a sleeper cell. Just like in the game of hide-and-seek, you never know who might be hiding where until they come out and surprise you.
