ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Snowmaking

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen snow that's not real? Like the kind you see in movies or on TV during a Christmas show? That's called fake snow or snow that's been made by people. This is what we call snowmaking!

Now, let me explain how snowmaking works. Imagine you have a big hose, and you want to make snow. You connect the hose to a water source, like a lake or river. Then, you pump the water from the source up to the top of a mountain.

When the water reaches the top, it goes through a tiny nozzle, like a showerhead, and sprays out into the air. But it's not just water that comes out, it's a mix of water and really, really cold air!

The super cold air turns the water into tiny ice crystals, and as the ice crystals fall to the ground, they start to pile up and make a blanket of snow! Pretty neat, right?

But sometimes it's too warm outside to make snow, so snow makers use something called a snow gun to help make snow when it's not cold enough. A snow gun is like a big fan that blows the super cold air over the water as it sprays out of the hose, just like a fan blowing a breeze.

And that's how snowmaking works! It's a really cool way to make snow, and it helps make sure people can go skiing, snowboarding or just have fun in the snow, even when it's not cold enough for snow to fall naturally.
