ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Social vulnerability

Social vulnerability is a term used to explain the challenges that people may face if something bad or unexpected happens in their lives. It gives an idea of how much individuals and communities may struggle with the effects of- or recovery from- a disaster, illness, or other negative event. A family, for example, might be considered socially vulnerable if they have low incomes, or lack support from family or friends. When a disaster happens, these families may have a harder time than those who have more resources.
