ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Spring tide

Have you ever been to the beach and noticed that sometimes the water is really close to where you're standing, and sometimes it's really far away? This is because of something called the tide, which is the way that the ocean moves up and down.

Sometimes, when the sun, moon, and Earth are all lined up in a certain way, the gravity from the moon and the sun work together to make the tide extra high. We call these times "spring tides," even though they have nothing to do with the season of spring.

So, when there's a spring tide, the water can come all the way up to where you're standing on the beach, and sometimes even further inland. It can be really cool to watch, but you also need to be careful because the water can be really strong and dangerous.

On the other hand, when the moon and sun are not lined up, the tide is not as high as it is during a spring tide. We call this a "neap tide." During a neap tide, the water is farther away from where you're standing on the beach.

So remember, a spring tide is when the tide is really high because of the way the moon and sun's gravity works together. Always be careful around the water during a spring tide!
