ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Standard of review

Okay kiddo, so imagine you are playing a game and there are certain rules you have to follow to win. The rules are like a standard that everybody has to follow to make sure everyone plays fair.

Now, imagine that there is a referee who checks if you are following the rules or not. This referee also has some rules to follow called the standard of review. This means that the referee has to follow certain guidelines when they are checking if you are playing fair or not.

Similarly, in our legal system, judges have a job to review decisions made by other judges, government agencies, or other groups. Just like a referee, judges also have to follow certain rules when they are reviewing these decisions, which is called the standard of review.

The standard of review is like a guideline for judges to decide how much power they have to change or reverse a decision made by someone else. It helps them understand their roles and responsibilities, and also ensures that everyone gets a fair and just outcome.

So basically, the standard of review is like a rule book that judges follow to make sure they are doing their job properly and fairly.
