Okay kiddo, so you know how you live in a city or town, right? Well, Austria is like a big country made up of lots of different cities and towns, but instead of calling them cities and towns, we call them states!
There are nine states in Austria: Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Tyrol, Carinthia, Salzburg, Vorarlberg, and Burgenland. Each state has its own government and leader, kind of like how your town has a mayor.
People who live in each state have different traditions, food, and even speak different dialects or languages. For example, people in Tyrol might wear traditional lederhosen and eat schnitzel, while people in Carinthia might speak both German and Slovenian and enjoy dishes made with potatoes and dumplings.
So even though everyone in Austria is part of the same country, each state has its own unique culture and identity!
