Statistical independence

Statistical independence means that the one thing doesn't affect the other thing. Imagine two coins, flipping them one after the other. The outcome for the second coin doesn't depend on what happened with the first coin. That's what statistical independence is - the two things you're looking at (the two coins in this example) don't affect each other.
