ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sterile cockpit rule

When people are flying an airplane, they need to pay very close attention to what’s happening around them. Just like when you are trying to color or draw, you need to focus and not get distracted by anything else going on. So, when the airplane is taking off or landing, there is a rule called the “sterile cockpit rule” that says the pilots and other crew members can only talk about things that are important for flying the airplane safely. They can’t talk about what they had for breakfast, who won the ball game, or anything else that is not important for flying the plane. This helps them concentrate and not make any mistakes that could be dangerous. It’s like when you’re taking a test at school, you can’t talk to anyone else and you have to focus on the test. The sterile cockpit rule is kind of like that, but for flying an airplane.
