Stoma (medicine)

A stoma is a little hole made in your body by a doctor. It can be on your tummy or neck. It looks like a little dot that is always open. This is because some people might need help going to the bathroom or breathing, and the stoma helps them to do that.

Some people might have problems with their bowels or need to have surgery to remove them. When this happens, the doctors might have to make a stoma on the tummy. It's like a little shortcut for poop to come out of your body into a special bag. So you don't need to go to the toilet.

Other people might have trouble breathing, and they might need a stoma on their neck. It's like a little hole that helps them breathe better. This is called a tracheostomy. It means the doctors can put a special tube into the hole to help you breathe. It's like a straw but to help you breathe instead of drinking.

Some people might feel scared or worried about having a stoma. But it's okay to have one. It helps you to feel better and go back to doing things you enjoy. The doctors and nurses will show you how to take care of your stoma and make sure you are comfortable.
