ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Stream of consciousness writing

Okay kiddo, imagine you have a toy box with all kinds of toys inside. When you open the toy box, you can take out any toy you want and play with it. Now imagine your brain is like that toy box, and it has lots of different thoughts and ideas inside that you can take out and play with.

Stream of consciousness writing is a way of writing where you take all those thoughts and ideas out of your brain and put them down on paper, one after the other, without stopping or thinking too much about what you're writing.

It's kind of like taking your crayons and drawing lots of pictures, one after the other, without worrying too much about what they look like. You just let your hand move and draw whatever comes to mind.

It might seem kind of silly or random at first, but it can actually be a really good way to get your creative juices flowing and come up with new ideas for stories or poems or whatever you like to write.

So, whenever you want to try some stream of consciousness writing, just grab a piece of paper and a pen or pencil, or even your computer or tablet, sit down and start writing whatever comes to mind, without worrying about spelling or grammar or anything like that.

Just let your thoughts flow, like a stream, and see where they take you. You might be surprised at what you come up with!
