A struggle session was a form of public humiliation sometimes used in China during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). During a struggle session, a group of people (often led by the Chinese Communist Party) would confront someone they considered an enemy (the target) and accuse them of political crimes or mistakes. The target would then be verbally and sometimes physically attacked, and expected to confess to the accusations. Struggle sessions were used to punish people for disagreeing with the Communist Party or for having a different opinion. People were often publicly humiliated or even beaten by their fellow citizens during these struggle sessions.
