ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Subcategorization frame

A subcategorization frame is like a special recipe that helps us understand how words fit together in a sentence. It tells us which words can be used after other words and which words cannot. Just like how we need certain ingredients to make a cake, we need certain words to make a sentence. For example, if we want to say "I ate a cake", we need the word "ate" to come before "cake". But if we want to say "I saw a cake", we need the word "saw" to come before "cake". The subcategorization frame helps us know which words can come in which order in a sentence to make it sound correct. This lets us understand what someone is trying to say and helps us communicate better with others.
