ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Valency (linguistics)

Ok kiddo, so you know how words are made up of letters and those letters make sounds, right? Well those sounds can also have meanings, just like words do.

Now, when we put those sounds together in a certain way, they can change the meaning of the word. This is called valency.

Valency in linguistics means the number of arguments or complements that a word needs to make sense in a sentence. In simpler terms, it’s like the amount of puzzle pieces a word needs to fit in its spot in a sentence.

For example, let’s say we have the word “eat”. This word has a valency of one, because it only needs one thing to make sense: a direct object. So, we could say “I eat pizza” and it makes sense.

But, let’s take another word like “give”. This word has a valency of two, because it needs two things to make sense: a direct object and an indirect object. So, we could say “I give you a book” and it makes sense.

So, valency is really just a fancy way of counting how many puzzle pieces a word needs to fit in its spot in a sentence. It helps us understand how words work together to create meaning in language!
