ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Subtext

Hi kiddo!

So, you know how sometimes people say things but they don't really mean what they're saying? That's kind of what subtext is. It's like a hidden message or meaning behind what someone is saying or doing.

Let me give you an example. Say your friend comes up to you and says, "Hey, do you want to come over and play with my toys?" That's the actual text or what they're literally saying. But the subtext or the hidden meaning could be that your friend is feeling lonely and wants to spend time with you.

Subtext can be really important in movies or books too. Sometimes the characters say one thing, but their body language or the situation they're in tells us something different. It's like a secret code that we have to figure out to understand what's really going on.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
