Tally marks are like little lines (|) that people use to keep track of things. They’re usually used when you want to count something quickly and easily without having to write down lots of numbers. When you start counting, you draw a line for each thing you’re counting. For example, if you're counting the number of apples you have, you draw a line for each apple. Once you get to four lines, you draw a fifth line across the other four lines. This makes it much easier to keep track of how many things you've counted, especially if you have a lot of things to count. So, tally marks are a simple and useful way to keep track of numbers without using a lot of words or numbers.
