ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tax protester conspiracy arguments

Okay, kiddo, so some people don't want to pay taxes because they think it's not fair or they don't like how the government spends their money. But just like you have to follow rules at school or at home, grown-ups have to follow laws made by the government. One of those laws is that everyone who earns money has to pay some of it back to the government to help pay for things that everyone needs, like schools, hospitals, and roads.

Now, some people who don't like paying taxes will say things like "taxes are illegal" or there's a "secret way to not pay taxes" called the "tax protester conspiracy". But those things aren't true. The government has the right to collect taxes, just like you have to follow rules set by your parents or teachers.

If someone tries to tell you that there is a way to not pay taxes, you shouldn't listen to them. Not only is it against the law, but you could get in trouble with the government and have to pay even more money. So it's best to just pay your fair share and be a responsible citizen.
