Telluric contamination

Telluric contamination means that stars and other things in the night sky have invisible trails of gas and particles around them. This gas and particles can be seen when you take a picture of them and they look like a sort of fog or smudge in the image. This is called telluric contamination, because it comes from Earth's atmosphere.
