ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Temperature conversion

When we measure how hot or cold things are, we use something called temperature. Temperature is like a special kind of measure that tells us how much heat something has. We use different units to measure temperature, but the two most common ones are Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Celsius is like a way of measuring temperature that goes from very cold to very hot. 0 degrees Celsius is really cold, like when it's snowing outside, and 100 degrees Celsius is really hot, like when water boils and makes steam.

Fahrenheit is another way of measuring temperature that is used mostly in the United States. It's also a way of measuring how hot or cold things are, but it starts at a different point. 32 degrees Fahrenheit is like the temperature of ice and 212 degrees Fahrenheit is like the temperature of boiling water.

Sometimes we need to convert temperature from one unit to another. For example, if you're traveling to a country that uses Celsius and you're used to Fahrenheit, you might need to convert the temperature so you know how hot it is outside.

To convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit, you can use a special formula:

1. Multiply the Celsius temperature by 1.8 (or 9/5).
2. Add 32 to the result.

For example, if it's 20 degrees Celsius outside, you can convert it to Fahrenheit like this:

1. 20 x 1.8 = 36
2. 36 + 32 = 68

So 20 degrees Celsius is the same as 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

To convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius, you can use another formula:

1. Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature.
2. Multiply the result by 5/9.

For example, if it's 70 degrees Fahrenheit outside, you can convert it to Celsius like this:

1. 70 - 32 = 38
2. 38 x 5/9 = 21.111... (or approximately 21 degrees Celsius)

So 70 degrees Fahrenheit is the same as about 21 degrees Celsius.

Remember, Celsius and Fahrenheit are just different ways to measure temperature, but you can always convert from one to the other using these formulas.
