ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Text-based user interface

Okay kiddo, imagine you have a toy car that you can control with words. You don't need a remote control, you just say what you want it to do and it does it.

Now imagine if you could use words to control the computer too! That's what a text-based user interface does. It's a way to control the computer with words instead of pointing and clicking with a mouse.

Instead of seeing pictures and buttons on a screen, you see words and letters. You type in commands or instructions that tell the computer to do things. For example, if you want to open a file, you type "open" then the name of the file.

It might sound hard, but it can actually be really fast and efficient once you get the hang of it. A lot of programmers and computer experts use text-based interfaces because they can do things more quickly than with a graphical interface.
