ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Threshing

Threshing is like when you have a lot of wheat or other grains (like rice or barley) and you need to get the seeds out so you can use them to make food.

Think of the grains as being like stickers, stuck to the stems of the plants.

To get the seeds out, you first cut down the plants and gather them into a big pile.

Then you use a special tool, called a threshing machine, or sometimes just a threshing tool, to separate the stickers from the stems.

The threshing machine works by spinning, shaking, or hitting the plants. This makes the stickers fall off and separate from the stems, like when you shake a branch and the leaves fall off.

Once the stickers are separated, the next step is called winnowing, which is like blowing on the stickers to get rid of any extra bits of stem or plant that are still mixed in.

After winnowing, you are left with just the good, clean seeds that you can use to make bread or other foods.

That's how threshing works!
