ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of women's rights (other than voting)

Okay kiddo, women have been fighting for lots of different rights for a really long time. Let's start at the beginning!

Back when there were cavemen and cavewomen, things were pretty equal between the genders because everyone had to work together to survive. But as societies grew and changed, women were often left out of important things like owning property, making decisions, and even being educated.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, women started speaking up and demanding more rights. They wanted to be able to work, go to school, and do things that men were able to do. A really important thing that happened during this time was the Suffrage Movement, where women fought really hard for the right to vote.

But there were also other important things happening during this time. For example, in 1848, a group of women met for a convention and wrote a document called the Declaration of Sentiments, which listed all the ways that women were being treated unfairly in society.

As time went on, women started making progress in different areas. For example, in the 1960s and 1970s, there was something called the Women's Liberation Movement, where women were pushing for things like equal pay and better job opportunities.

There were also important court cases that helped women gain more rights. In 1960, a woman named Margaret Sanger was responsible for getting birth control legalized (which really helped women have more control over their own bodies).

And finally, there were lots of different laws that were passed to protect women's rights. For example, in 1972, a law called Title IX was passed, which made it so that schools and universities had to give girls and women the same opportunities as boys and men.

Overall, women have come a long way in the fight for equal rights. But there's still work to be done!
