Okay kiddo, do you know what tobacco is? Yes, it's a plant that grown and used to make cigarettes, which some people smoke with. Well, for many years, companies that make cigarettes have been trying to get more people to use them. They try to make smoking look cool, fun or even healthy, but it is unhealthy for people of all ages.
Now, do you know what marketing is? It's when people try to persuade others to do or buy something through ads, commercials or other promotions. The tobacco companies wanted to sell more cigarettes to everybody, but they started targeting African Americans more than other groups.
Instead of showing everyone smoking their cigarettes, they used images and messages that would appeal to African Americans, such as hip-hop music, fancy cars, or famous people from the community. They even provided free cigarettes in black neighborhoods and sponsored events like jazz concerts, for people to try smoking.
All of this is very bad because tobacco can hurt your body and cause problems like cancer or lung diseases. It's not fair that tobacco companies try to get people to smoke more, especially people who may not have as much access to healthcare or resources to help them quit smoking. That is why organizations and governments have been working to stop this kind of marketing and protect people from the dangers of smoking.
