ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Trigger warning

A trigger warning is like a warning sign that tells us something might bother or upset us. For example, imagine you're watching a movie about a scary monster, and suddenly it jumps out and scares you! If you knew there was going to be a scary monster in the movie, you might have wanted a warning sign that said "WARNING: Scary Monster Ahead!"

Trigger warnings work in the same way. They let people know that content ahead might bring up feelings or memories that are difficult for them. This can be related to things like violence, abuse, trauma or mental health issues.

Trigger warnings allow people to be prepared and ready to deal with difficult topics. It helps some people to feel more in control and can avoid causing harm caused by inadvertently exposing someone to something that would be upsetting or triggering to them.

It's important for people to feel safe and comfortable, and trigger warnings can help by giving people the ability to choose what they are exposed to. It's a way to be kind and respectful to other people's feelings, even if we don't always understand them.
