ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

USS San Francisco

The USS San Francisco is a big, powerful ship that belongs to the United States Navy. Back in the year 2005, the San Francisco was traveling deep underwater in the Pacific Ocean, kind of like a really big submarine. While it was swimming around, it suddenly hit something hard and ran into trouble.

Think of it this way: Imagine you and your friends are playing soccer. You run really fast, then accidentally bump into a tree and fall down. It's painful, right? Well, the San Francisco's accident was like that, but much, much more serious. Instead of hitting a tree, it hit something called a seamount that was hiding under the water. A seamount is like a big underwater mountain that can be super tough to spot, especially if you're traveling quickly underwater.

The collision was really scary, and because the San Francisco was so deep underwater it didn't have any communication with the rest of the world, which made it even scarier. But the crew members of the San Francisco had special training to deal with emergencies like this, and they sprang into action to keep themselves and the ship safe. They worked really hard to keep the ship balanced and moving, even though some parts of it were damaged.

Sometimes when grown-ups are in charge of something really important, like a big ship, they make mistakes. But even when things go wrong, there are always people who are ready to help fix the problem and keep everyone safe. That's what the sailors on the USS San Francisco did, and they should be very proud of themselves for doing such a good job.
