ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Universal jurisdiction

Universal jurisdiction is when someone is held accountable for something they did wrong, no matter where they did it. It's like when you accidentally break a toy at a friend's house, and you still have to say sorry even though you're not at home anymore.

Sometimes, people do really bad things like commit crimes against humanity or war crimes. They might try to run away to a different country to avoid getting in trouble for what they did. But sometimes, even if they're not in their home country, other places can still hold them accountable for what they did.

This is called universal jurisdiction because it's universal - it applies everywhere. Just like how your parents expect you to apologize if you do something wrong, the world expects people who commit really bad crimes to be held accountable, no matter where they did it.
