ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Volumetric flask

A volumetric flask is a special type of bottle that helps scientists and chemists measure extremely precise amounts of liquid. It's kind of like a very fancy measuring cup that can measure down to the milliliter, which is a tiny amount of liquid.

Imagine you're playing with Legos and building a tower. You need exactly 10 blocks to make the tower the right size. Now, imagine that you had a special tool that could measure exactly how many blocks you need, even if it's just one piece. That's what a volumetric flask does for liquids.

The volumetric flask has a very specific shape, with a long thin neck and a bulbous bottom. The neck is very narrow, which is important because it helps make sure that the liquid inside is exactly at a certain level. This is called the "meniscus," which is the curved line where the liquid meets the glass.

To use a volumetric flask, you first measure out the amount of liquid you need, like 25 milliliters. Then, you carefully pour the liquid into the flask, making sure to use a funnel or pipette so you don't spill any. You keep adding liquid until it reaches the line on the neck that matches the amount you need. Then, you stop pouring and swirl the flask gently to mix the liquid, making sure not to splash or spill any out.

Now, you have a perfectly measured amount of liquid in your flask, ready to be used for experiments or testing. The volumetric flask is a very important tool in scientific research and allows scientists to be extremely precise in their measurements, kind of like how you need 10 Lego blocks exactly to make your tower just right.
