ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vote splitting

Alright kiddo, imagine you and your two friends want to vote on which game to play: Mario Kart or Minecraft. If all three of you vote for Mario Kart, then that game will win because it got the most votes.

But, what if one of your friends really loves Minecraft and insists on voting for it? Now, you and your other friend can vote for Mario Kart, but because your other friend split their vote with you, Minecraft ends up winning.

This is what people mean when they talk about "vote splitting." It happens when two or more candidates with similar ideas or policies run for the same position, and as a result, they split the votes of people who would otherwise agree with them. When this happens, it can make it easier for a candidate who is different from them and perhaps not as popular to win the election because their votes are not split.

So remember, when you and your friends vote, make sure you both agree on the same game, or else you risk vote splitting and not getting the outcome that you want.
