Waggle dance

The waggle dance is how bees talk to each other about where the tasty flowers are. Imagine you are a bee and you want to tell your friends where to find some yummy flowers. Instead of using words, you do a special dance called the waggle dance.

First, you stand up and start wiggling your bottom back and forth. Then, you walk in a straight line while still wiggling your bottom. The length of your walk and the speed you wiggle your bottom tell your friends how far away the flowers are.

Next, you turn around and wiggle your bottom in the opposite direction. This tells your friends the direction of the flowers in relation to where the sun is. For example, if the flowers are facing the sun, you waggle your bottom straight up and down. If the flowers are to the left of the sun, you do a wiggly dance to the left.

Your friends watch you do this dance and then they fly to the flowers you told them about. The waggle dance helps bees find food and work as a team to keep their hive strong and healthy.
