Weathering hypothesis is a scientific idea that says Earth's atmosphere and climate changed over time because of the way rocks are broken down when exposed to air, water, and other elements. This process is called weathering, and it happens when minerals in rocks interact with chemicals in the atmosphere. It can also happen when rocks are exposed to extreme temperatures. Weathering can cause rocks to wear away, or break down into smaller pieces. The pieces can eventually become soil that plants and animals can use to grow. Scientists believe that over time, the weathering of rocks has caused changes in Earth's climate that created the perfect conditions for life to evolve.
