ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Whitespace characters

When we write things, we use letters and other symbols to make words and sentences. But sometimes we need to leave space between the words and sentences so they don't all run together and become confusing. That space is called whitespace.

Whitespace characters are special symbols that we use to create that space. They are characters that you can't see, but they take up space in a sentence. For example, when you press the space bar on your keyboard, it creates whitespace between the words you are typing. Other examples of whitespace characters include tabs, which are a little bit wider than spaces, and line breaks, which create a new line in your text.

Whitespace characters are important because they help us read and understand what we are writing. If there was no whitespace between the words, the sentences would all blend together and be very hard to read. So, the next time you're writing something, remember to use whitespace characters to make it easy for others to read!
