ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wing configuration

Wing configuration means the different shapes and arrangements that airplane wings can be in. When an airplane is flying, the wings help it lift up into the air and stay there. There are different types of wings that can be used on an airplane depending on what the airplane is supposed to do.

One type of wing is called a straight wing. This means that the wing is straight like a board and doesn't have any curves. Planes with straight wings are good for flying slowly and taking off and landing on shorter runways.

Another type of wing is called a swept wing. This means that the wing has a curve to it, like a bent arm. Planes with swept wings are good for flying faster because the curve helps reduce drag, or the force that slows down the plane.

Some planes also have delta wings. This means that the wings look like a triangle with the pointy end facing forward. Delta wings are good for flying very fast because they create a lot of lift and don't create as much drag.

Finally, some airplanes have wings that can move. These are called variable-geometry wings, or swing wings. The wings can change position depending on how fast the plane is flying. When the plane is flying slower, the wings can be spread out to create more lift. When the plane is flying faster, the wings can be swept back to make the plane more streamlined.

So, just like there are many different types of cars with different features, there are many different types of airplane wings with different shapes and configurations that make the plane work better in different situations.
