ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Witness intimidation

Okay, so let's pretend we are playing a game of hide and seek, and you are the one seeking.

You are trying to find your friends who are hiding, but one of your friends is very good at hiding, and you can't find them. So, you ask another friend to help you find them.

However, this hiding friend doesn't want to be found, and they don't want your other friend to help you find them. So, they start saying mean things to your other friend, like "if you help them find me, I won't be your friend anymore" or "if you tell them where I am, I'll hurt you."

This is a type of witness intimidation. Instead of playing a game, it can happen in real life when someone is called to be a witness in a trial, to tell what they know about a situation.

Someone might try to intimidate or scare them, so they won't tell the truth or won't talk at all. This is wrong and illegal, and it can hurt the justice system by keeping important information hidden.

So, it's important to be brave and tell the truth, even if someone is trying to intimidate you into staying quiet.
