ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Witness tampering

Okay kiddo, so you know how when you play a game with your friends and someone cheats, that's not fair, right? Well, imagine if someone was playing a really important game, like in a courtroom, and someone tried to cheat by making a witness say something that wasn't true. That's called witness tampering.

When people go to court to tell the judge and the jury what happened, those people are called witnesses. They tell what they know about a situation so that the judge and jury can make the right decision. Sometimes, someone might try to make a witness say something different or leave out important information, and that's not okay.

Witness tampering is a very serious crime because it can change the outcome of a court case, which means that the wrong person might be punished or the right person might not get the punishment they deserve. So it's very important that people don't try to cheat by tampering with witnesses.

If someone tries to tamper with a witness, it's important that they tell a grown-up they trust, like a parent or a teacher, or even the police. The grown-ups will make sure that the tampering stops and that everyone is safe.
