Wood preservation

Okay kiddo, let's talk about wood preservation.

When we talk about wood, we're usually talking about things like trees or wooden furniture. But did you know that wood is actually made up of tiny fibers called cellulose? These fibers can be damaged by things like insects, fungi, and moisture.

That's where wood preservation comes in. Wood preservation is all about protecting the wood from damage, so it can last a long time. There are lots of different ways to preserve wood, but we're going to talk about two of the most common: pressure treating and sealing.

Pressure treating is when we take a piece of wood (like a board) and put it in a special machine. This machine pumps chemicals into the wood to make it stronger and more resistant to damage. The chemicals might be things like copper, zinc, or arsenic. These chemicals are good at fighting off insects and fungi that can damage the wood.

Sealing is when we put a protective coating on the wood. This coating might be a varnish or a stain. The coating helps keep moisture out of the wood, which can make it last longer. It can also protect against things like sunlight, which can fade the color of the wood.

So in summary, wood preservation is all about protecting the tiny fibers in wood from damage. We do this by pressure treating the wood with chemicals, or by sealing it with a protective coating. By doing this, we can help the wood last a long time and stay looking good!
