ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

X + Y sorting

Hello there little buddy! Today, we are going to talk about something called "x+y sorting." It's kind of like sorting your toys on your shelf, so you can easily find what you're looking for.

Imagine you have a bunch of toys on your shelf that you want to organize. Let's say you have some cars, some blocks, and some dolls. Now, instead of organizing them by their types (cars in one spot, blocks in another, and dolls in another), we are going to sort them based on their size.

But wait! What if we want to make it more fun and challenging? Let's assign each toy a number that represents its size. So, the bigger your toy is, the higher the number it gets. Now, instead of just sorting them by their size, we are going to sort them by adding their x and y values (or in our example, by adding their size number).

For example, let's say your first toy is a car and has a size number of 2. Your second toy is a block with a size number of 4. And your third toy is a doll with a size number of 3. We add their size number, making the sum of your car toy (2) plus your block toy (4) equal to 6. We then add the size number of your doll toy (3) to it, making the total x+y value equal to 9.

After adding all of the size numbers of your toys, we'll end up with some numbers, like 9, 10, 11, etc. Then, all we need to do is put the toys in order based on their x+y values, starting from the smallest number to the biggest number. That way, it will be easy to find the toy you're looking for based on its size and placement on the shelf.

So, that's x+y sorting for you! We use a formula to add up the size numbers of different toys and then organize them in order based on their total value. It might sound tricky at first, but it's actually really fun and makes sorting your toys much easier!
