ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Yusheng

Yusheng is a type of colorful salad that people in some Asian countries eat during a special time called Chinese New Year. It's made with lots of different ingredients that each have a special meaning to bring good luck and happiness for the new year.

First, people put a big plate of shredded vegetables on the table, like carrots, radishes, and cucumbers. Then they add raw fish (usually salmon), which represents prosperity and abundance. Next, they sprinkle on some crackers or fried noodles for a crispy texture, symbolizing gold or wealth.

After that, they add some sauces and spices, which each have a special meaning. For example, plum sauce represents strength and kindness, while sesame oil represents longevity and sweetness. Finally, everyone at the table starts mixing everything together with their chopsticks, tossing it high into the air while saying good luck wishes for the new year.

Once everything is mixed up and everyone has said their wishes, it's time to eat the yusheng! The combination of flavors and textures in the salad make it really tasty, and everyone feels happy and excited for the new year ahead.
