ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sashimi

Okay kiddo! So do you know what sushi is? It's like a little ball of rice with fish or other yummy things on top, right? Well, sashimi is like sushi's cousin. Instead of having rice, it's just the fish (or sometimes other seafood) all by itself!

You know how sometimes grown-ups cook fish like salmon or tuna and we eat it for dinner? Well, with sashimi, the fish isn't cooked at all! It's just cut into really thin slices and served raw. Don't worry though, the fish is chosen very carefully and is super fresh so it's actually safe for people to eat.

When you order sashimi at a restaurant or sushi place, it usually comes with little bowls of soy sauce and wasabi. Soy sauce is like salty brown sauce that you can dip your fish slices in, and wasabi is a green paste that's very spicy but also very yummy! Just be careful not to use too much, it's really strong.

And that's sashimi! It's a special way of eating fish that tastes really good and looks really pretty too. Maybe when you're all grown up you can try some for yourself! :)
