A long time ago in a place called Batavia (which is now Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia), something very terrible happened. Many people were hurt and killed in something called a massacre.
You know how sometimes kids get really mad at each other and start fighting? Well, it was kind of like that. Except instead of kids, it was grown-ups. And instead of fists and yelling, they used swords and guns.
You see, Batavia was a place where lots of different people from different parts of the world lived. Some were European and some were from places nearby like China and Indonesia. These different groups didn't always get along very well. They had different ideas about how things should be done and sometimes they argued about it.
One day, a group of Chinese people got very angry about some things that the Europeans were doing. They thought the Europeans were being unfair and treating them badly. So, they decided to fight back.
They attacked the Europeans and their families who were living in Batavia at the time. They killed many people and even burned down some buildings. It was a very scary and sad time.
Eventually, the Dutch (who were one of the European groups living in Batavia) were able to stop the fighting and bring some peace back to the city. But many people had already been hurt or killed.
Today, we remember the 1740 Batavia Massacre as a very tragic event in the history of Batavia (now Jakarta) and Indonesia. It reminds us that even when we are different from each other, we should always try to treat each other with kindness and respect.
