Aircraft heading

Aircraft heading is the direction an airplane is facing, like the direction on a map. To help tell which way an airplane is heading, it has a special type of compass called a gyro compass. On this compass, the number at the top indicates which direction the nose of the airplane is pointing. That number is called the aircraft heading. For example, if the number reads "180" that means the nose of the airplane is pointing due south.
