ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Antanaclasis

Antanaclasis is a big fancy word that means using the same word or phrase twice, but with a different meaning each time.

Let's say you're playing with a ball, and you accidentally hit it into a tree. You might say, "I see the ball, but how will I get the ball?" See how you used the word "ball" twice, but the first time you meant the physical object, and the second time you meant the action of retrieving it? That's antanaclasis!

Another example would be a famous quote from Benjamin Franklin: "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." In this sentence, Franklin uses the word "hang" twice, but the first time he means staying united, and the second time he means being executed by hanging.

Antanaclasis can be a clever and witty way to play with language and make a point, but it can also be confusing if the listener or reader doesn't pick up on the different meanings.
