ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Blockmodel

Okay kiddo, let's talk about blockmodel. So imagine you have a lot of friends and you want to figure out who are friends with who. It can get pretty confusing, right?

Well, a blockmodel is like a map that helps you see who's friends with who in a really easy way. You group your friends together based on who they are friends with.

For example, let's say you have three friends – Sarah, Timmy and Lucy. Sarah is friends with Timmy and Lucy, but Timmy and Lucy aren't friends with each other. So you put Sarah in one group and Timmy and Lucy in another group.

Now you have two groups – one for Sarah and one for Timmy and Lucy. But what if you have more friends and they're all friends with different people? That's when it gets really confusing, right?

That's when you use a blockmodel. You make a table with your friends' names on one side and their friends' names on the top. Then you put an "X" in each box where two people are friends.

Once you do that, you can start seeing patterns. You can see which friends are in the same group because they have a lot of "X" marks in the same row or column.

And that, kiddo, is a blockmodel – a special map that helps you see who's friends with who in a really easy way. Pretty cool, huh?
