Canadian Indian residential school system

A long time ago, in Canada, some people thought it would be a good idea to take kids from their families who were Indigenous and put them in special schools. These schools were called Indian Residential Schools.

In these schools, the kids were taught different things than what they would learn at home. They weren't allowed to speak their Indigenous language, wear their traditional clothes, or practice their beliefs. Instead, they were made to speak English, wear European-style clothing and learn European customs, which many of them did not like.

The children at the schools were treated very poorly. They were punished if they spoke their own language or tried to escape. They were sometimes abused, both physically and mentally. They had to work and do chores, which was not typical of Indigenous kids.

They were also isolated from their families, so they couldn't see their parents, siblings or their community. They felt very lonely, sad, and scared. Some children even ran away, but they were usually caught and punished.

For a long time, this residential school system was legal in Canada, and many Indigenous kids were taken from their families and sent to these schools. It is now recognized as a terrible thing that happened to Indigenous peoples in Canada. Many survivors of the residential schools have suffered from poor health, mental health issues, and other challenges because of their experiences.

The government has apologized for this residential school system, and people are working to make amends and help Indigenous people heal from the pain it caused.
