ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Caspase

Okay kiddo, so inside our bodies, there are little things called cells. And these cells have important jobs that they need to do to keep us healthy. But sometimes, these cells need to die and be replaced by new ones. That's where caspases come in.

Caspases are like the "clean-up crew" of the cell. They are special proteins that help break down and get rid of old or damaged cells that are no longer needed. It's kind of like when you clean up your toys and put them away instead of leaving them out on the floor.

But wait, there's more! Caspases also play a really important role in something called apoptosis. That's a big word that means when a cell needs to die for a specific reason, like if it's infected with a virus or if it's become cancerous. When this happens, caspases are activated and they start breaking down important parts of the cell, like its DNA and proteins. This helps the cell die in a way that doesn't harm the rest of the body.

So, in summary, caspases are like little clean-up crews in our cells that help get rid of old or damaged cells and also help the body get rid of cells that need to die in a certain way.
