Cells are the most basic building blocks of all living things. They are tiny cells (smaller than a speck of dust!) that can only be seen with a powerful microscope. Cells have special jobs that all work together to keep the body healthy. They grow, use energy, break down food, repair damage, get rid of waste, and help fight off germs. All cells have a special coating around them, and inside this coating is a jelly-like liquid called cytoplasm. The cytoplasm contains small things called organelles. The organelles do different jobs, like breaking down food to give energy or getting rid of waste. Cells also have a special code inside of them that tells them how to do their jobs; this code is called DNA.
