ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Celluloid ceiling

The celluloid ceiling is a concept that talks about a problem regarding women in the film industry. Think of the film industry as a big building that creates movies or TV shows. On the top floor of this building lies a ceiling, made out of clear plastic material. This ceiling is called the "celluloid ceiling."

Now, whenever you take a look at who makes the decisions or has the power in the film industry, you will see that most of them are men. These men control things like the budget for movies, who gets to be in the movies, and who gets to direct them. Unfortunately, this makes it very difficult for women to climb the ladder and get to the top floor where the big decisions are made.

The clear plastic ceiling, or celluloid ceiling, acts as an invisible barrier that stops women from reaching the top. Even if they have the talent, drive, or experience to be in these positions, they won't be able to due to this barrier created by men with power.

This is an important issue because we need women's voices to be heard in the film industry. If women aren't allowed to make movies or work behind the scenes, then the films and TV shows we watch will only show us one side of the story. So, we need to remove this invisible barrier and make room for more female voices in the industry.
