Channeled Scablands

Imagine you are playing with clay and you have a big piece of it in front of you. Now, take a smaller piece of clay and put it on top of the big piece. If you push really hard on the small piece, it might make a dent or a channel in the big piece of clay.

Now, let's talk about the Channeled Scablands. A long time ago, huge glaciers covered a lot of North America, including parts of what is now Washington state. When the glaciers melted, they created a lot of water that rushed through the area.

Just like when you push really hard on the small piece of clay, the rushing water made channels and dents in the earth, creating the Channeled Scablands. Over time, these channels got bigger and bigger as water continued to rush through them.

Today, you can see these channels and dents in the earth at places like the Dry Falls State Park, where huge cliffs were once completely underwater before the channels were formed. So the Channeled Scablands are kind of like big dents and channels in the earth's surface that were formed from rushing water a long time ago!
