ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chemical dependency

Chemical dependency happens when someone becomes addicted to a substance, like drugs or alcohol. This means they feel like they really need the substance to feel okay and can't stop using it even if they want to. It's like when someone really likes eating candy and they can't stop even if they know it's not good for them.

When someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol, it changes how their brain works. The substance can make them feel really good, but over time, they need more and more of it to feel the same way. This is called tolerance. And when they stop using the substance, they can feel really bad, like they're sick or sad. This is called withdrawal.

Chemical dependency can be really dangerous and can hurt people in lots of ways. It can make it hard for someone to do well in school, have friends, or keep a job. It can also hurt their body and make them really sick. This is why it's important to get help if you or someone you know is struggling with chemical dependency. There are people who can help you feel better and get better.
