ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Clitic

Okay kiddo, a clitic is a little word that is like the baby brother or sister of a bigger word. They like to stick themselves onto the end of other words to help them make sense.

For example, take the word "I'm". The "I" part is a big word all by itself, but when we add "m" to the end, we get a little word that helps us make a shorter and easier way to say "I am".

Sometimes clitics even change their form depending on the word they stick themselves to. So, for example, if we were to put "not" on the end of "is", it would change into "isn't".

Clitics might be little, but they can do a big job in making our sentences sound right and helping us get our point across.
