ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Code switching

Code switching is like using different languages or ways of speaking depending on who you are talking to. It's like how you might talk differently to your friends than you would to your teacher or your grandma.

People do code switching to fit in better with different groups and to make sure they are communicating effectively. For example, if you are speaking to someone who only speaks Spanish, you might switch to speaking Spanish to make it easier for them to understand you.

Code switching can also be used to show respect or to assert your cultural identity. A bilingual person might switch between speaking English and their other language to show pride in their background.

So, just like you might change your words and tone depending on who you are talking to, some people change their language and communication style to fit into different situations.
