ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Control tower

Imagine you are playing with your toy cars and you have a big tower in the middle of your play area. This tower is like a traffic control tower at an airport. It helps the airplanes flying in the air to land, take off and move around safely on the ground.

Just like your tower, a control tower at an airport is a tall building where air traffic controllers sit and watch all the airplanes in the area. Using special equipment like radar and radio, they track the airplanes and talk to the pilots to make sure they know where to go and what to do.

When a plane wants to take off or land, the air traffic controllers in the control tower give them permission and instructions to do so. They help guide the airplane to the runway, and make sure that no other planes are in the way. They also give the pilots information about the weather, other planes in the area, and anything else that might affect their flight.

So, just like your toy car tower, a control tower at an airport helps keep all the planes organized and safe while they are in the air and on the ground.
